| Charity & volunteerism go hand in hand. The latter is simply charity in the form of your time and expertise.
There are many things that need to be done in this world, and a good number of things that may not need to be done, but certainly should be done. Often times, such tasks fall into a limbo because it is often not immediately profitable to engage in such tasks. That's where volunteerism picks up the slack of the human condition. It is very easy to make a difference, if you want to. You feel good for doing it and those that benefit feel good - everyone's happy! There seems to be a resurgence of volunteerism in America. It is nice to see people trying to think of what they can do for others, even if just for the briefest of moments. I firmly believe that if we do not become more altruistic as a race, either we will perish or we will wish we had. As of late, I seem to fill up my time volunteering to do things within my workplace and departments. I am not very experienced in good websites for volunteerism, if you know of any, please let me know (use my my cool questions/comments form). I did a little volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity at the University of Texas at Dallas, and that was great. I don't have any links here, and that is with good reason. There are so many good places to volunteer. You can start by asking your employer, local schools, charity organizations, shelters, and just start surfing the web. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer. If you simply jump on Google and search for "volunteer opportunities in <insert your city/state/province/country> you'll probably find something. If you are looking for a charity to which to donate, I recommend looking at CharityNavigator.org to help guide you. If you have any good ideas or additional info, I would LOVE to hear from you (try out my nifty questions/comments form). |
